Wow, who would have thought? I now have a phone that works! When I type, the words show up on the screen instead of just feeling the haptic feedback vibrate a lot and stop, only to spew out a paragraph in one quick blurt after my phone catches up with things.
I think a lot of the performance issues I had with the Optimus 2X have to do with the fact that the OS was built without fstrim. Without the option to clean up used flash blocks my phone had to be re-formatted every month or two, sometimes sooner. Otherwise I’d have to wait for up to 30 seconds or more before my typed words would show up on the screen.
But this review isn’t about that terrible thing. Although, it’s because of the P999 that I feel like writing. The P999 made me vow to never buy an LG phone again. A vow I have obviously broken.
I’m happy that this new LG phone has a quad core snapdragon processor, however. I no longer have to deal with being locked down to the current version of my OS if LG stops supporting it. Qualcomm phones usually update for long after their release because they don’t encrypt things quite like the nVidia Tegra line. I’m terribly bitter than I was stuck with Android 2.3 for 2 years simply because Wind Mobile and LG kept pointing fingers at each other instead of updating the blessed OS.
The display is wonderful. At 720p a phone screen is pretty much more than adequate. Reading text is a pleasure and while my eyes may resolve the pixels at that density I’m quite happy with what I see.
The performance for everything from games to browsing to simply getting around the lovely Android 4.3 interface is seamless.
I’ve run benchmarks from 3DMark to Antutu and my phone seems to score higher than average for this model, which is pretty nice. I ran the stability benchmark and the temperatures hovered safely around 40 degrees. It has not locked up during a benchmark or stress test, and that’s nice to see.
It has reset once. When it did, I think it wanted to install an OS update at the same time as I was doing a bunch of other things. I’m not really sure what the circumstances were surrounding the one and only un-initiated reboot I’ve had but it seems to be a fairly isolated incident.
The P999, on the other hand, was particularly moody.
Over-all I’d give this phone a 5/5 stars so far. I’ve only owned it a few days though so we’ll see how I feel after it experiences some wear.
Also purchased, but still awaiting delivery are 2 QI wireless chargers and a case with screen protector. Usually I don’t put a case on my phone but I think I’ll make an exception since the backing is apparently easily scratched and broken.
